A little Irish rugby history!

The first organized Irish rugby club was founded in Dublin in 1854.

The students at Dublin University had learned the game while they were in English-run public schools.

For about five years in the 1870′s there were two unions, or leagues, and after that, the two Unions then agreed to combine.

At this point the joint name of Irish Rugby Football Union was formed for the entire country.

At that time, they established branches in Ulster, Munster and Leinster. Six members from each province ran the Union, and they were known as the Council of eighteen. They met annually, and still do, to this day.

Irish rugby is played on the grounds at Landsdowne Road, which is also the home to the Landsdowne and Wanderers Rugby clubs. They have added to the seating capacity in recent years, and they can now seat about 50,000 people. The Rugby Union also owns Thomond park in Limerick, Ravenhill Park in Belfast and some grounds that have been rented to clubs in other areas.

The Irish Rugby Union has a development model over the long term, which gives the teams and coaches an integrated framework by which they can help to develop the skills of rugby players at all experience levels, and all levels of participation. This plan outlines their philosophy of long-term participation and sound practice strategies, for the enjoyment of Irish rugby.

The long term development model was created as the result of extensive consultation and discussion between a developmental expert, the Coach Development department and the National Coaching and Training Center. The intent here is to give the most positive experience for all rugby participants.

The framework of this idea will ensure that the training and play experience of the game is appropriate for each developmental stage of the players. This model is centered on the players, since the specific characteristics that pertain to each stage are based on the capabilities of players at every stage of development.

To develop this system to help players of all skill levels, the rugby union closely examined the game’s demands at every stage and level, as well as the capabilities of the players involved.

This analysis was coupled with validation from active coaches at every level of the game, and this resulted in the player capabilities assessments at each level and across five areas, including tactical, technical, mental, physical and lifestyle.
These lists of players’ capacities help to provide the means to design and promote rugby programs all over Ireland, at all levels of experience. All coaches, the Coach Development Department believes, should be qualified and appropriately trained to work with various players at any level of experience.

An important aspect of the L.T.P,D. Plan is what they call the “essence” of the players, games and coaches at every stage of development. This will help all players and coaches at all levels of the game.

This plan is not designed to produce world class athletes only. It is intended to help all players at all developmental levels to enjoy the game to its utmost.
