Irish Rugby

Lansdowne Road in Dublin is where Irish Rugby was born, played in a stadium built in 1872 until it was replaced by Aviva Stadium.  The Irish Rugby team has won the annual Six Nations Championship outright 11 times and shared it 8 times which is quite an impressive history in the world of rugby.

The first organized  Irish Rugby club was in 1854 at Dublin University, followed slowly by several additional clubs.  They’ve made 600 appearances, 252 wins, 29 draws and 319 losses and the game that will certainly go down in history happen in the year 2000.

This is the year Irish Rugby mutilated the United States with a score of 83-3, this is also their highest scoring game of all time.  The Irish Rugby team has seen its highs with 10 wins in a row yet also experienced its lows with 11 consecutive losses.  Despite the valleys, this is one team that bounces back strong.

Between 1997 and 1998, Brian Ashton was the coach but due to disappointing results, Warren Gatland took over in the later part of 1998.  Unfortunately, he couldn’t turn the team around and Ireland was unable to reach the final eight for the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

Jumping ahead to 2003, it came down to the wire in the Six Nations Championship but Irish Rugby was defeated by England, 42-6.  In 2005, Ireland was a favorite to watch in the championships as they won three matches in a row from the beginning but France crushed their dreams of a Grand Slam with a 26-19 victory.  The Irish Rugby team finished in third place.

The team went through a few changes and by the 2008 Six Nations Campaign, they came out strong with a win against Italy, only to be nudged out by France once again.

This defeat only made the Irish Rugby team more determined, giving them the drive that they needed to win the 2009 Six Nations Championships as well as the Grand Slam which they hadn’t won since 1948.  The team returned to Dublin with 18,000 fans waiting for them at the Mansion House to celebrate.

The 2011 Six Nations Championship began for the Irish Rugby team in Rome, paired up against Italy where a late drop goal by Ronan O’Gara secured an 11-13 win for the team.  They lost to France, defeated the Scots and their journey continues on.
