While some European countries have been participating in this sport for over a century, USA Rugby is a fairly new concept. The competition that turned into the American National Rugby League began in 1997. Super league America came together and organized a national team and then created an amateur competition, giving birth to the game of rugby in the United States.
How USA Rugby Began
In 1992, David Nui, who was a former professional player, came to Philadelphia where he began promoting the sport. American Rugby essentially had their first official competition in 1998 with six teams being the Glen Mills Bulls (Aston Bulls), New Jersey Sharks (Bucks County Sharks), New York Broncos (New York Knights), Philadelphia Bulldogs (Philadelphia Fight), Penn Raiders and the Boston Storm. In both 1998 and 1999, the championship went to the Glen Mill Bulls.
American Rugby announced that they needed a reorganization in 1999 and the league headquarters ended up moving to Jacksonville, Florida. United States Rugby League (USRL) became the new official name and they began attracting British teams to come to Florida for international competitions and training. Serious complications led to the bankruptcy of the USRL so the five domestic teams formed a new organization. American National Rugby League became the new head of American Rugby, headed by David Nui.

Expansion
Every few years, new teams have been added. 2002 brought the Wilmington Vikings (New York Raiders) and then in
2003, the Connecticut Wildcats and D.C. Slayers joined the American Rugby league. A few years later, the New Haven Warriors, Boston Braves and Jacksonville Axemen were added and then from 2007 through 2010, the Fairfax Eagles, Boston Thirteens and Pittsburgh Vipers joined as well.
The Bucks Country Sharks plan on rejoining for the 2011 competition and there are plans for the Chicago Stockyarders to be added on in the next few years as well.
2011 Split
Seven USA Rugby teams announced they are forming their own league in January, 2011. These teams include the Pittsburgh Vipers, Philadelphia Fight, New Haven Warriors, Jacksonville Axemen, Fairfax Eagles, D.C. Slayers and the 
Boston Thirteens. This new league is expected to be in effect by Summer 2011.
Championship
There are a few USA Rugby teams that have dominated the competition thus far. The Glen Mills Bulls have won six times, Connecticut Wildcats three times, New York Knights two times, the New Haven Warriors have won once and Jacksonville Axemen also have one victory.
